The Institute of Condensed Matter Physics was established in 1980s and currently includes both experimental and theoretical research on diverse condensed matter systems. In 2007, Condensed Matter Physics at ZJU was approved as one of National Key Disciplines. The institute has 34 faculty members, including 20 full professors and 2 special research fellows. There are 1 academician, and 2 distinguished professors of Yangtze River Scholars.

The institute has various instruments for material synthesis and structural characterizations, such as molecular beam epitaxy device, chemical vapor deposition device, optic float zone crystal growth furnace, electrical arc furnace, powder XRD spectrometer, angular resolution electron spectrometer (ADES - 400), atomic force microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscope. The instruments for the physical property measurments include dilution refrigerators,Oxford Superconducting Magnet, low temperature physical property measurement system (Quantum Design PPMS) and magnetic property measurement system (MPMS), etc. A measurement platform for physical property characterization is managed and open to the whole university.

Main research directions include unconventional superconductivity and strongly correlated electron systems, topological matter state, quantum phase transitions, quantum devices and quantum information, surface/interface physics, low dimensional materials, thin film physics, nano-science, soft materials and brain science, and simulations of condensed matter systems.
