Laboratory astrophysics is a frontier interdisciplinary field that utilizes space science experiments and particle detection technologies to directly measure cosmic-ray particles in space. This enables the study of high-energy astrophysical processes, dark matter, and solar physics. This research direction is led by Researcher Chen Hai and involves deep participation in major experimental projects aboard the International Space Station.

Core Research Directions

Our work primarily relies on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment on the International Space Station, conducting the following research:

  • Cosmic-Ray Physics: Precisely measuring the energy spectra and composition of electrons, positrons, protons, and nuclei in cosmic rays. This helps trace their astrophysical origins (e.g., supernova remnants) and investigate their propagation mechanisms through interstellar space.

  • Dark Matter and New Physics Exploration: Analyzing anomalous signals within cosmic rays to indirectly probe potential signs of dark matter particle annihilation or decay. We also search for revolutionary physical phenomena such as antimatter nuclei.

  • Solar Modulation Effects: Studying how solar activity modulates the flux of low-energy cosmic rays. Combining this with multi-wavelength observations deepens our understanding of solar physics and the heliospheric environment.

Methods and Significance

The team focuses on extracting physical information from the vast dataset of the AMS experiment. This work aims to directly address the century-old puzzle of cosmic-ray origins, provide crucial constraints for dark matter research, and cultivate talent in space science experimentation.

Laboratory astrophysics opens a new window for observing the universe through particles. The team at the Zhejiang University Institute of Astronomy is dedicated to making key discoveries in this data-driven field, exploring the most fundamental constituents and laws of the universe from our space-based laboratory.
