Abstract:
The basic physics and chemistry of organic solar energy harvesting will be reviewed, leading to understanding the properties of some photosynthesis-emulating dyad and triad molecules that broke records for long-time room-temperature charge separation. A combination of fs to ms time-resolved spectroscopies, organic synthesis, and extensive electronic structure calculations show the ultra-long-lived charge separation process to involve triplet spins separated by distances exceeding 3 nm. As an introduction to this research, the basics of molecular spectroscopy and electron-transfer theory will be reviewed, as well as the Born-Oppenheimer approximation and its role in setting the conceptual basis for chemistry. Initially, however, the basic physics behind light absorption and charge separation will be demonstrated using enacted dramas taken from undergraduate teaching material focusing on the nature of light, its interaction with matter, and, most significantly, the critical role of coherence in determining spectral outcomes.
