摘要:Sudden cardiac death as a result of cardiac arrhythmias is one of the leading causes of death in the world. Although cardiac arrhythmias has been studied well over a century, their underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. One of the main problems is that cardiac arrhythmias occur at the level of the whole organ only, while in most of the cases only single cell experiments can be performed. Due to these limitations alternative approaches, such as multiscale biophysical modelling of the heart, are currently of great interest. Such methodology is extremely valuable if it combined with experimental and clinical methodology.

In my talk I will briefly explain basic principles of multiscale biophysical modelling of the heart, present some results which were obtained using modelling and combination of modelling with modern experimental techniques, such as optogenetics. Report on data driven methods to identify sources of cardiac arrhythmias from clinical data using a novel methodology of DG-mapping developed in our group. I will also report on concept of biological self-restoring system that allows automatic detection and correction of cardiac arrhythmias.

个人简介:

Professor Panfilov received his PhD from the Institute of Biological Physics, Soviet Union Academy of Sciences in 1984, studying non-linear waves in excitable media using theoretical physics approaches. He was working at the Institute of Biological Physics (Soviet Union), University of Utah (USA), Utrecht University (Netherlands) and currently he is a Professor at Gent University (Belgium) and at Leiden University Medical Centrum (Netherlands). Dr. Panfilov’s research is focused on understanding mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and developing new approaches to their management. He is a member of editorial boards of PLoS One, Frontiers in Physiology, Processes, Bioengineering. He has published over 240 articles in high-impact journals, with over 15,000 total citations.
