摘要:Cardiac fibrosis is a well-known arrhythmic condition which can lead to sudden cardiac death. Physically, fibrosis can be viewed as a large number of small obstacles in an excitable medium, which may create nonlinear wave turbulence or reentry. The relation between the specific texture of fibrosis and the onset of reentry is of great theoretical and practical importance.

In my talk I would like to discuss what is fibrosis from modelling point of view and main approaches of numerical representation of fibrosis. Discuss mechanisms of initiation of spiral waves due to fibrosis. Then review results of several recent studies in which we characterized properties of fibrotic texture and proposed a concept of minimal functional cluster which allows quantitatively predict the arrhythmia probability for different fibrosis densities and tissue excitability.

Then I will present several unsolved questions which may be interesting for the future studies. From my point of view they include questions on representation of realistic fibrotic textures, questions on proper numerical method to represent fibrosis. Another questions are related to the type of sources which occur in fibrotic tissue and discussion on possibility to modify texture of fibrotic tissue to prevent the onset of arrhythmias.

个人简介:

Professor Panfilov received his PhD from the Institute of Biological Physics, Soviet Union Academy of Sciences in 1984, studying non-linear waves in excitable media using theoretical physics approaches. He was working at the Institute of Biological Physics (Soviet Union), University of Utah (USA), Utrecht University (Netherlands) and currently he is a Professor at Gent University (Belgium) and at Leiden University Medical Centrum (Netherlands). Dr. Panfilov’s research is focused on understanding mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and developing new approaches to their management. He is a member of editorial boards of PLoS One, Frontiers in Physiology, Processes, Bioengineering. He has published over 240 articles in high-impact journals, with over 15,000 total citations.
