In an era of rapid technological advances such as AI and geopolitical change, scientists are increasingly called upon to work together in new ways to address the challenges of a sustainable planet, green energy, an ageing society and an economy that supports opportunities for employment and a good life.
AI and quantum computing promise transformation in work and society. Collaboration and interdisciplinary work in health or clean energy technologies are opening new possibilities for human benefit and innovation, including in work with industry. And yet international cooperation in Science is changing as Science leaders such as the United States review their political priorities, funding and openness to international experts.
An eminent physicist, leader in education and advisor to government on infrastructure and investment, Sir Keith Burnett FRS is internationally respected for his work on the role of Science and scientists in delivering real public benefit, and for his commitment to maintaining strong links between scientists across the world — in particular between China and the United Kingdom
In this talk, Sir Keith will draw on recent examples of scientific research internationally and reflect on a rapidly changing Scientific landscape and ask: As China leads the world in published Physics research and other key areas, how is Science itself changing?
And what will be needed from scientists as they partner internationally to optimise the benefits of their work for the whole of society?
Sir Keith will also share a comparison of UK–China education and Physics research environments, and offer encouragement for students and early career researchers to pursue further studies and research in Physics — reflecting on how Science is developing to be ‘for the people’.

基思·伯内特爵士(Sir Keith Burnett)是英国著名物理学家,出生于威尔士的朗达谷。1975年,他在牛津大学耶稣学院获得物理学学士学位,随后于1979年在牛津大学取得博士学位。作为玻色–爱因斯坦凝聚领域的开创者之一,他在量子物理、量子光学以及凝聚态物理方面也开展了许多具有深远影响的研究工作,享有国际声誉。
