The newly established Institute for Astronomy at the School of Physics, Zhejiang University, invites applications for multiple postdoctoral research fellow positions in astrophysics. We seek highly motivated, outstanding young researchers to join our dynamic and growing institute.

Successful candidates will work with one of the following faculty members on cutting-edge research projects:

  • Prof. Haifeng Yang: Research focuses on the protoplanetary disks and planet formation, using (sub)millimeter polarimetric observations, radiative transfer simulations, and magnetohydrodynamic simulations.

  • Prof. Bin Liu: Research focuses on the orbital dynamics of few-body systems and resonances; the dynamical origins of gravitational-wave sources (e.g., black hole/neutron star binary mergers); and the dynamical origins of exoplanetary systems.

  • Prof. Ping Chen: Research focuses on multi-wavelength observational studies of transients in time-domain astronomy, theprogenitor stars and explosion mechanisms of thermonuclear supernovae, and the formation of compact objects in core-collapse supernovae and their interactions in binary systems.

Appointment, Salary, and Benefits:

  • The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension to a third year based on performance. The expected start date is flexible in 2026, preferably before September.

  • We offer an internationally competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.

  • Comprehensive benefits are provided, including subsidized on-campus housing, social insurance, and a housing provident fund.

  • The institute is committed to supporting the career development of postdocs. This includes generous research grants for attending international conferences, opportunities to supervise students, and a supportive environment for developing independent research projects and applying for external funding.

  • Distinguished candidates will be nominated and strongly supported by their supervisor to apply for the prestigious Zhejiang University Qiushi Junior Fellowship, which provides a significantly enhanced remuneration package and additional research support.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or a closely related field is required (by the time of appointment).

  • A strong background in theoretical, observational, or computational astrophysics relevant to the chosen supervisor's research area.

  • A demonstrated record of research achievement and publication.

Application Materials:

Interested applicants should submit the following materials as a single PDF file to the email address of their prospective supervisor:

  1. A curriculum vitae, including a full list of publications.

  2. A statement of past research experience and future research interests (max 3 pages).

  3. The applicants should also arrange 2-3 reference letters to be sent directly to their prospective supervisor.

Prospective Supervisor Contact Emails:

  • For Prof. Haifeng Yang: hfyang@zju.edu.cn

  • For Prof. Bin Liu: liubin23@zju.edu.cn

  • For Prof. Ping Chen: ping.chen@zju.edu.cn

Please use the email subject line: Postdoc Application - [Your Name].

Deadline:

For full consideration, complete applications must be received by February 28, 2026. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the positions are filled.

Institute Environment:

The Institute for Astronomy provides a vibrant and collaborative research environment with unique resources, most notably the dedicated SilkRiver High-Performance Computing cluster. This platform, with more than 7,000 Intel 4th Gen Xeon Max compute cores and 72 GPU-accelerated cards, is a cornerstone for numerical simulations and big data analysis in astrophysics. Located in the beautiful and historic city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang University offers a superb living and working environment.
